Bluebonnets and Bees

Spring is here in Texas, and the wildflowers are, well, going wild! The rains have been good, and the temperature is pretty mild, so the plants have taken the opportunity to really show off their blooms. The bees, which I understand are declining here, are taking every opportunity to get out there and forage.

We had a nice outdoor lunch in Kathy and Rick's yard, and took advantage of the nice weather to enjoy the outdoors. Kathy works very hard to make her garden a beautiful and relaxing place to be. I couldn't help but sneak off and snap a few photos of the flowers and plants.

The bluebonnet is the State Flower of Texas, and I can understand why it was chosen. It is a very unique flower, a wild member of the lupin family, and thanks to the efforts of the late Lady Bird Johnson, grows all along the highways of Texas. It makes traveling along the busy interstate highways and major roads of this area a very pleasant experience in the early spring.

Well, there's plenty more photos and stories to tell, so I will go ahead and post this one. Jan and I have been traveling a lot in recent weeks, and there are plenty of photos to post.

Till next time, my friends!

  1. The flowers are beautiful, Uncle Mike! You definitely were able to capture the vivid blue color extremely well.

P.S. The color made me chuckle... I'm running in the Student Government elections right now, and royal blue is the color of my party/ticket that I'm running on. That color has kind of taken over my life... and now it shows up here too!! :)

  2. Glad you liked the flower photos! It's definitely a labor of love to try to do justice to their beauty. This time I got close...
Best of luck in the elections! I hope you learn a lot and have some fun while you are getting elected. :-) You will do well, I am sure of it.
Keep coming back, there will be more photos and stories coming soon. I have so many that I don't have time or space to post up, but I try to get something up about once a week.
    Much love to you,
    Uncle Mike

  5. Hi Kairi-Linda!
Soo sorry that I have been absent for a while. I have been traveling with work and it has put a crimp in my blogging! I do have some photos that I will be putting up soon. Some photos from the Houston Zoo and other stuff.
Look for it later today or tomorrow, 'cause I am back on the Road tomorrow night!
    All the best to you,
    Mike

  6. Those are beautiful, Mike. The colours are so vivid. And they do look like Lupins. Lupins grow wild in the east coast of Canada, where I grew up. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. All different colours too. Glad to see spring is happening in your neck of the woods. The last of the snow just melted from our yard. Soon things will be popping up in my yard too! Cheers
